There’s something actually important and useful and interesting that you want to do with your life and you’re not doing it.
You know this. You don’t want to know this, but you do. Deep down.
(Hey, some of you are already doing Your Life’s Work, and crushing it. Crush on. But the vast majority are not. Over 70% of people hate their jobs. And, even worse, some people work in Private Equity!)
You need to be saving the world - woo boy does it need saving right now - and you’re not.
Plain and simple. I hate to be so in your face about it but everyone else is letting you float by collecting checks and zoning out in status meetings. This is my role. Shaking you out of that horseshit and waking you up to the fact that you know you could, and should, be doing better.
My mission in life is helping people like you zoom out, take a long, hard look at their life, realize they *can* break free from the Golden Handcuffs and do what they’re supposed to do for work.
My mission is to liberate you individuals from the everyday pain of your ‘ok’ = mediocre, ‘fine’ = mid working life so you can repurpose those 40+ hours each week to light you up and bring you satisfaction and joy, and my big picture mission is, and I don’t exaggerate here, to save the world.
Because who is going to save the world, if we don’t? You, and me.
Here’s your part in saving the world: You have to be doing the right work, Your Life’s Work, the work that the world needs and the work that you’re uniquely placed to deliver.
(Saving the world in this context doesn’t need to mean literally saving the rain forests, but if that’s what you’re supposed to be doing then I’m damn well gonna push you to do that. But it could just as easily mean Saving Your World i.e. making your life and your family’s life and the lives of everyone around you so much better when you are invested in, energized by, and HAPPY with your work.)
Here’s my part in saving the world: I help people like you - all the people who did what they were trained, told, programmed, to do what they were supposed to do, all the people who got the good grades and the fancy degree and the prestigious job and climbed the ladder but now you kinda feel shitty about your contribution in life and you don’t know why…
I help you wake up to the fact that you get to do what YOU want to do with your life, not what your parents told you to do or your teachers or The Joneses you’re keeping up with or some jerks from prep school or fancy college who love to flaunt their wealth, not realizing they’re just broadcasting over and over again “I’m Empty.”
You might look at this and say ‘But I’ve got bills to pay’ and yeah, for sure, besides the aforementioned jerks (whose parents were rich so they never needed to work but they still went out and got into consulting because they are 100% devoid of imagination and true joy) we all have bills to pay.
When I help liberate you from The Golden Handcuffs, I absolutely don’t advise you to immediately cast them aside and launch your family into dire financial straits.
No, first we liberate your MIND.
First we help you see that The Golden Handcuffs are on your wrists at all.
First we help you see that there are many, many other possible paths for you to walk down, if you only would allow yourself to see them.
First we give you permission to dream, to imagine what your run-of-the-mill workday could be like if you did your life’s work, instead of someone else’s idea of it.
Only once you have clarity on the big picture you haven’t looked at in years - or maybe, ever - do we start to even think about what it would take to get there. Only then do we start making a plan for what you’re going to do about the big disconnect from what you just happen to do now and what you’re going to spend your time doing in the future.
There are lots of details, and they’re different for everybody, so I won’t share them here. But just for the record, you better believe I’m going to prompt you to take an extremely realistic look at your financial situation so you can build a SMART and REASONABLE plan to make your work life better.
This ain’t no get rich / get happy quick scheme. Go sign up for some guru’s online course if you want that smoke blown up your ass. Nah, it’s gonna take work, it’s gonna take time. Honestly, for some of you to complete the full transition into your life’s work, it might take years, not months.
But we can get you feeling so much better, energized, excited about your path, in just a few weeks, and we can get you on the path in just a few months.
Here’s where you might think “But I’m old, I’m just running out the clock til retirement.”
It depends on your specific circumstances but, well, I hear this from people who are like.. 47… and it drives me nuts. First of all, you’re not old. (You’re young, like me!) Second of all, you’re gonna run out the clock for what, like… 18 years ‘til retirement, if you’re lucky? Quoting my 8-year old when I tell her we’re taking a 15 minute drive: “That’s a longggggg time!”
Give me a couple of months to open your mind and change your outlook. Even if we end up building a 3-year plan to change your work life - pretty darn conservative, we can almost certainly do it faster - you’re gonna salvage 15 years of joy out of the drudgery. That’s a longgg time too! A long time for you to be happy and feel excited to pop out of bed to do the work you were meant to do.
